Computer Maintenance Checklist
Keeping your computer well-maintained and in good shape can save you some headache in the future. It can help you to avoid viruses and it can help your PC to run as efficiently as possible. We will take a look at a good computer maintenance checklist in this guide.
Weekly Maintenance Task Checklist
There are quite a few tasks that you should perform weekly on your computer. Let's take a look at these tasks.
Run a Virus Scan
This is one of the most important tasks that you need to do on a regular basis is scanning for viruses. I would highly recommend setting up some type of automated schedule within your virus protection software so you don't forget to do this. Schedule this scan for a time that you think you will be away from your computer. This way, you are not disrupted by the scan too much. Also, make sure that the virus definitions are being updated very often.
Defragment Your Hard Drive
Another task that is worth doing weekly is defragmenting your hard drive. This will keep your hard drive or hard drives running in tip-top shape.
Scan for Spyware or Malware
Another task that is great to do weekly is scanning for spyware or malware. Some spyware removal software applications let you schedule this task as well. I recommend scheduling this to start a little bit after your virus scan is scheduled to start. This way you can knock out both scans at one time.
Windows Update
We highly recommend that you have Windows automatically detect and install updates. However, if you don't, it is recommended that you check for Windows updates weekly.
Monthly Maintenance Task Checklist
There are a few things that aren't quite as important that can be done on a less frequent basis. Let's take a look at the tasks that should be done monthly.
Clean Your Hard Drive
You can build up a lot of temporary and unused programs in a month. I would recommend cleaning your hard drive every month or so. You can remove unused files, documents, videos, and pictures. You can also remove any unused programs that you don't need anymore.
