AT&T to Buy T-Mobile

Plans are in the works for the eventual takeover of T-Mobile by AT&T. The deal stands at $39 billion. Although the deal needs approval from regulatory agencies, cellular phone users in the United States are not happy with the development as this could crutch any form of competition and thus lead to higher data charges.

Investors welcome the news of shedding a subsidiary that has been dragging the German Telecommunication giant, Deutsche Telekom, behind for years now. Deutsche Telekom is the parent company of T-Mobile.

T-Mobile stands at fourth place in America's cellular phone service rankings. The company has not generated a profit since 2000. T-Mobile has distinguished itself from the likes of Verizon and AT&T by building a reputation as the low-cost mobile operator and introducing goodies like the Sidekick phone and the first Android Smartphone. However, it is still haunted by a massive defection rate of its users and thus a lack of profit.
